Your Move, 2018
Covert racism is not seen its felt. It can be detected from the slightest grimace to an outlandish question. Through the use of a chessboard, audio recordings, and black paint this work examines the experience of people of color navigating predominately white institutions. Each participant had the control to manipulate the space and paint their mark on the chess pieces. The auditory and physical action of these stories carries a weight of various emotions. To an issue that doesn't seem to "exist" I hope to make room for stories that have been told, retold, and forgotten.
